Strawberry Themed Party

Strawberry Themed Party
Hey Everyone 🙂
A few weeks ago, a friend of mine posted a few pics of her daughter’s 5th birthday party.  I seriously cannot stop looking at the photos…and also wishing I was 5 lol.  She did such an amazing job putting it all together, from the homemade cakes to the cute strawberry basket favours.  For anyone who may be planning a little one’s birthday party soon (or even something for us adults 😉  ) , she was kind enough to share all her inspiration and ideas with us.  All I’m thinking is how much I can’t wait until Amel is old enough for something like this!

“I Love any opportunity to get creative! My daughter loves summer, strawberries, and picnics. I thought what better way to celebrate her birthday than to have her own little picnic. Unfortunately, Canadian spring is pretty unpredictable and we ended up with a freezing cold rainy day! We decided to bring the picnic in, and she couldn’t be happier with the way everything turned out!”

“For as long as I can remember my mom always baked our cakes, and I’m a big believer in passing on traditions.” The cake was inspired by this Strawberry Thyme Cake. The base was a lemon ricotta (which sounded absolutely delicious to me), however I wasn’t sure that the kids would feel the same. I really like the simple natural look of the cake, so I made my own vanilla cake and added a few spoons of strawberry jam to the buttercream. It tasted absolutely delicious!
For the rest of the dessert table, Saleme made some dipped strawberries, mini strawberry cheesecakes, fresh strawberry shortcake, some of those delicious white powdered mini donuts from the grocery store, and to top it off, strawberry mint infused water.

For decor, Saleme was inspired by the floral fabric she had found at Fabricland.  She has a slight obsession with cake stands, so this is what contributed to such a dreamy table!  She purchased her cake stands over the years from Home Sense and Home Goods.
She also set up another small table with a hand lettered chalkboard to welcome her guests.  To accompany the chalkboard, she put out a jar of liquorice and a variety of strawberry flavoured candies. She then dressed it up with a few fresh strawberry plants that her and her family later planted in the backyard.

For the kids table, Saleme included the old school Voortmans strawberry wafer cookies and of course, more candy!

Each child took home a strawberry basket filled with: a mini jam jar, strawberry lip smackersstrawberry hand sanitizer, strawberry bubble gum, and rock candy.

Spicy Shrimp Quinoa Bowl

Spicy Shrimp Quinoa Bowl

Hey everyone!

I hope your week is off to a good start.  I have a long to do list of work around the house we need to do this week, but so far I’ve just said “lets start tomorrow” haha.  So wish me luck that today, I get this week moving! Haha.

So I have made a pact with myself to slowly start to get back into the grind of exercising and eating healthy, but boy its been tough! I can almost always fit a nice walk in the day, but eating healthy or even eating a decent meal at all has been hard.  I find that sometimes the days just go by so fast that by the end of them, I realize I just snacked all day…. and usually not the healthy snacks either.  (Any Mama’s with me on this one?!? LOL) .  Yesterday I decided enough is enough and I’m going to make sure I am getting in some healthy meals throughout the day.  So I broke out the QUINOA.

Quinoa Bowl-1

What I love about quinoa is it just seems to absorb the flavour of whatever your eating, and bonus, it’s packed with tons of protein.  I made a huge batch, this way I can store it in the fridge for the week.  If I have easy access to it, and I don’t always have to put a pot on to cook it, I’m hoping it encourages me to eat the healthier option more.

Any who, I went through the fridge and threw together a bunch of things I had.  Boy oh boy did this turn out good.  It was so quick to make!  The quinoa takes 15 min to cook, but if you have that done ahead of time, this recipe should only take you about ten min to prepare and cook!

Quinoa Bowl-2

For this recipe you will need:

  • Quinoa, cooked (cook based on instructions on packaging)
  • 1 tbspn olive oil
  • 1 onion
  • 3-4 large mushrooms
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 1 tspn chili flakes
  • Sriracha to taste
  • Salt/pepper to taste
  • 3/4 cup corn (frozen/canned/or fresh)
  • 1 cup salsa
  • 8-10 raw shrimp
  • Half an avocado

This recipe feeds 2.

Quinoa Bowl-3

Start by sautéing the onions and garlic on medium heat with olive oil.

Quinoa Bowl-4

Once your onions are almost fully translucent, add the mushrooms.  Cook until the mushrooms have become a nice golden brown.  You can then add your corn, shrimp, and salsa, as well as your spices.  I used about 2 teaspoons of Sriracha with my dish but you can use any amount you think fit for your taste.

Quinoa Bowl-5Quinoa Bowl-6

Cook on medium heat until your shrimp has fully cooked.  It should be pink in colour, but if your like me and are still unsure, cut into a piece of shrimp to check that it is no longer translucent.  I am always over cooking my shrimp because I’m a worry wart that I’m going to serve it raw haha.

Quinoa Bowl-7

Quinoa Bowl-8

That’s it!  I sliced some avocado to garnish my dish.  I highly recommend doing so as well.  It really complimented the spice of the dish nicely…. AND who doesn’t like avocado?!?!  Except my husband lol.  More for me!

Have a good week!

Nursery Reveal – Before & After

Nursery Reveal – Before & After

Well it’s been a long time coming but Amel’s nursery reveal is finally here! While I was putting together the images of the room, I stumbled upon these before pictures.  So voila! Now this is a Before and After haha.

I know what your thinking… why on earth would I makeover such a pretty pink room, with a pink light… and a very clean looking pink carpet.

IMG_4497

..Oh yes, and pink curtains.

It’s truly crazy what updated floors and a can a paint will do for you!  #ByeFelicia

My goal was to create a very bright whimsy room with loads of colour.  I also wanted to create a room that Amel could easily grow into design wise.

DSC01240

My favourite part of the room has to be the floral wall. I was in between so many thoughts whether to do wall paper, paint a mural, do a gallery wall, or to do decals.  I decided to go the decal route and I am absolutely in love with this one from Urban Walls in Vancouver BC.  It was so fun and easy to install.  I always have people asking me if we painted the flowers on the wall.  So you can imagine how seamless it must look! Ahh just so in love.  I keep telling mike I want to put decals all over the house now hahaha.

Nursery Reveal-2

Okay I had to narrow down my stuffed animal options for Amel… it was so hard! But I think these cuties did the trick.  The pink bear was actually mine as a baby!  Needless to say it was probably a lot fluffier then.

Nursery Reveal-4

Our light fixture is an antique.  I have a couple other similar antique lights like this one, so when my aunt was cleaning her attic and came across this gorgeous mustard yellow lamp, she knew who to give it to. (I feel like right here I would want one of those cool sunglasses smiley face emojis….is it possible to add emojis into a blog post?!? )

Nursery Reveal-5

This mirror and potted artificial tree are from Home Sense.  Luckily it is artificial because I don’t think it would have made it to picture day if it wasn’t!

  3. Giraffe Toy
  4. Artificial Tree
  5. Mirror
  6. Wall Decal
  7. Curtains
  8. Change pad
  9. Change pad Cover
  10. Crib
  11. Crib sheets

Hope you enjoyed the room reveal! Happy Monday 🙂

DIY Diaper Box Upcycle

DIY Diaper Box Upcycle

Hey Everyone!

This DIY is especially near and dear to my heart since I am such an organization freak! Im obsessed with boxes and containers for storage…especially the pretty ones 😉 .  Also, I think any creative person would agree with me when I say that I hate to part with things that I think could be used for something else down the road.  In this case… a really strong box and a whole lot of extra baby swaddles.  So without further ado, here is what you will need for this project:

  • a baby swaddle
  • a diaper box (however this is not mandatory…really you could use any size box you would like that has a full bottom and sides)
  • a hot glue gun
  • paint
  • scissors
  • rope
  • box tape

DIY Basket-3Start by reinforcing the bottom opening of the box with tape.  Then, remove the top opening flaps with scissors.

DIY Basket-4

Drape your swaddle blanket over the opening of the box and spread the swaddle to the corners of the box with your finger tips (as shown below).

DIY Basket-5DIY Basket-6

Next, run a line of hot glue around the top edges of the box.  Do this gradually while pressing down the swaddle as you glue.  Be sure to evenly gather the extra fabric around the box so that it is not all gathered in just one section.

DIY Basket-9DIY Basket-8

Once your finished, trim the excess swaddle fabric around the edges of the box.

DIY Basket-10

Now this is the fun part! Starting from the top corner of the box, hot glue the beginning of your rope.  Press firmly for about  7-10 seconds or until the glue dries enough that the rope will not fall off.  Continue to glue the rope around the box, making endless circles until you have reached the end.  When gluing, you do not need to do a continuous line of hot glue;  instead you can do a small dollop every 2-3 inches.

DIY Basket-11

Once you have finished gluing the rope around the box you are finished!  If you want to get the painted stripe at the bottom of the box, tape off the section of the box you would like painted.  Either using spray paint or a brush and paint, paint the bottom half of your box.

DIY basket-1

There are so many ways you can decorate your new Upcycled Diaper Box.  Feel free to add different types of rope or other decorating materials like pom-poms.  I would love to see what you all come up with!  Comment below with any questions or comments and be sure to share pictures of your DIY Upcycled Diaper Box using #ohsomonaDIY .

Buttermilk Pancakes

Buttermilk Pancakes

Happy weekend everyone!  I thought I would share the most delicious buttermilk pancake recipe with you!  I mean pancakes this good are pretty much dessert, and I’ve heard dessert for breakfast is a good think right?

ohsomona-9

Even though it’s probably not the most correct way to make pancakes, I threw all my ingredients in one bowl starting with dry and finishing off with the wet ingredients… as you could probably tell, I was really trying to minimize the amount dishes that followed afterwards.

Below you can find the recipe:

  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1/4 granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 cups buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup salted butter, melted

Combine ingredients starting with the dry then to the wet.  Cook in a skillet or flat top on medium heat until golden brown on both sides.

DIY Coconut Rose Lip Scrub

DIY Coconut Rose Lip Scrub

With the winter weather still upon us, and the cold & flu going around, I figured I wasn’t the only one in desperate need of a good lip scrub!  I absolutely love this lip scrub.  The coconut oil is super moisturizing and healing.  Not to mention it takes just minutes to whip together.

Below is the recipe.  Let me know how you like it! 🙂

Combine:

  • 7 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 tablespoons coconut oil
  • 1 teaspoon honey
  • 1 teaspoon rose water
